Amish Neighbors

The boys and I went with one of my new friends to visit and sight see our Amish neighbors.  I didn't realize they lived that close to us.  My friend knows several of them personally, so we were able to stop at a couple of farms, talk with them, and buy from their shops.

Amish do not like for you to take their pictures so I made sure to try to respect that.  I did catch one couple working in a field when I was taking a picture of her house.

Wow! That is so neat, Kim. Thanks for sharing that. What beautiful, clean farms!

Right around us, we have Hutterite colonies. They are very much like the Amish. You can google: Hutterites, or Hutterian Brethren.

Hutterites live on colonies and live communally. They have apartments in row-type houses (reminds me of a lot of base housing in the military), only the apartments have no kitchens. The people eat communally in a big dining facility.

Men sit on one side, women on the other, and the children eat by themselves!

All share the work, but the women are retired at 55, whereupon they help watch children, I think. Each family has its own garden plot. The Hutterites farm. Each colony has its specialty, like raising turkeys, or something else.

They may not own anything personally. Unlike the Amish, they CAN have electricity, tractors, vans and trucks. The women are not permitted to drive. No newspapers, radios, etc.

They do not homeschool, probably because the still speak German in the home and want their children to learn English. The S.D. public school system sends a teacher and an aide out to the colony. They may not go to high school, but state law says kids must go to school till they are 16. So, they just repeat the 8th grade until they are 16!

They wear the same clothing, eye-glasses, etc. They find brides from other colonies. Very interesting.

Mary,
Thanks for sharing. That is interesting! We saw a one room schoolhouse there. The children were playing in the back yard. I wanted to take a picture so badly, but I refrained to respect them.
I think they use an Amish teacher and there were probably no more than 15 kids or so.

So neat! I've always wanted to visit an Omish community, but don't know of any nearby! Thank you for sharing! :)
