Home Life in winter

I used to really detest winter when we moved up here from Alabama. I was so used to the warmer weather and I thought I would die before I would ever get used to it!

Lately I am seeing that God made winter for a purpose. Is winter meant to draw families together as they spend time indoors in one another's company? For relationship building?
Shouldn't winter be a time of slowing down and enjoying the beauty around us?
I am learning to slow down and cherish these moments while they are here.
Before long the beauty will melt and we won't have today ever again....

Snow covered grounds, ice, and 4 degree weather!

Knot-tying lessons by daddy... while lingering in pajamas

This one is called the "blood knot".. because it's so tight. At least that is what daddy says...

Chocolate donuts from my 1934 Hershey cookbook

I think I had enough of the cold in Idaho to last me a while! :) The doughnuts look yummy!

Good reminder! I don't think I've ever looked so forward to spring in all my life! I usually enjoy winter and snow, but this year I'm really tired of it.

p.s. You're new blog background is really cute too!

I love the winter time! Isn't it nice that we are not having to mow our lawns? That is a big task for us during the rest of the year. Yes, it is hard to get around and it is cold and the fuel bills are high, but like you, we get to sit around and do crafts or watch tv or a movie, and most importantly, THINK! I hate being so busy that I can't think.

Living here in farm country, too, we have learned a lot about long winters and snow. Like: winter is a time when the ground stores up nutrients. The longer the winter, the more nutrients are stored up (which is why some crops which take a lot out of the soil to be able to grow require a short growing season -- a short growing season means a longer storing-up-nutrients season). Also, we learned that snow is fertilizer. The more snow, the more fertilizer.

You can make so many spiritual allegories out of this that it is incredible. Did you know that the Word of God is likened to snow in the scripture? (Get out your concordance -- I think it is in Psalms.) Snow sinks into the soil slowly as it melts, bringing its nutrients with it. The Word of God, like snow, sinks slowly into people hearts, (which are likened to soil) with its spiritual nutrients!!! Isn't that neat???

Lisa, I bet Idaho is FREEEEZING!

Kelly, It makes it harder with a new baby doesn't it?

Civilla, you are right! Winter seems so long sometimes, but it is not forever and there are a lot of lessons we can learn. :-)

Kim,

I am glad that you are learning with God's patience to enjoy all the seasons God has blessed us with, including winter. We don't get snow here, but winter isn't exactly my favorite time of year.

Also, I enjoyed the pictures of your boys learning new things. You have a "cute crew (smiles)." What a blessed mommy you are! Take care and may God continue to bless your beautiful family.

Hmm, God also made a certain place that is opposite winter, so not sure you have swayed me into thinking it is good :-)

Thanks for the perspective on winter. I think I'd enjoy winter better if I had one of your donuts???:) Seriously, thanks for the reminder to be content in whatsoever state I find myself.
