Verse Memorization ideas

I just wanted to share a Scripture Memorization that I got from a very creative friend Nicole C. (you may know her since she travels and sings)
She was very gracious (and humble) in sharing and I sooo appreciate her help!

So I am sharing this because if you are like me... I am a sponge for good ideas to help kids learn... I have wiggly boys who need a little "help" in this area of Scripture memorization. My boys are not inclined to enjoy learning verses by just repetition. I could not THINK of anything to do... One of my boys was getting to where he HATED studying verses. Ugh! Not good! And last week he told me he missed several words while saying it to his teacher. Help!
So I was looking online to find help! I saw an idea on this website.

http://www.msssbible.com/memoryverses/scripture.htm

They suggest you use tunes the kids would know. Then I remembered Nicole's idea of using pictures that help them remember. So I combined Nicole's idea with this website's idea and this is what we came up with. Microsoft's clipart website is awesome!

Here is Jonathan's verse for this week. Sing to the tune of "London Bridge" with the reference at the end. (on microsoft's clipart website,if you type in "God" it does not pull up Jesus or even anything remotely looking like God or a big light or anything like that. It pulls up nasty looking fake gods. You have to actually type "Jesus". You also have to substitute words. Like for "ashamed" I had to type in "embarrassed"). I haven't tried this yet but I know it worked for Nicole without the added music. I may not use music.. don't know yet. :-)

Have you had anything work well for you? I would love more ideas!

How adorable. Teaching scripture to kids has been a passion of mine. When Melanie was little we'd illustrate the verses by cutting pictues out of magazines. I still have Psalm 1 that she memorized when she was 4. I think it was getting to paste that made it fun for her! The boys might like each word put on a paper on the floor. Let them jump from word to word then move then further apart for each time through.

Nicole,

Thanks again for your idea! My boys LOVE it. Unbelievable for them to go from "awe Mom, do I have to?" to "can I sing it again"? We did it with the music and pictures and they loved it.

Pam, Thank you for the great ideas! My boys would especially love jumping from word to word. Anything to get those wiggles out!
You are always overflowing with creativity!

What we had been doing was just typing the words onto the computer and replacing the words with some type of clip-art. It was fun at first, but we all got bored with it after a couple of weeks. This variety is great!

Kim;

I enjoyed this post, grea ideas. There are so many different learning styles and it's hard to think outside of my own. I'm an auditory learning so I don't think of visual prompts. One of my guys is visual so these ideas are great. One very auditory thing I do to help my guys learn scripture is recording myself saying the verse 3 or 4 times(each time I say it with emphasis on different words) Then throughout the week I will play the tape.(usually at breakfast) By Sunday they have the verse memorized without a lot of energy on my part.(lazy, I know)

That's really cute. I wish someone had done that when I was little haha.

Thanks for the good ideas! My girls do pretty well learning Scripture...but I have used music before to help them with their hardest verses!

Months ago, you asked for my Kimberly's Cappuccino Shake recipe...but due to my being so nauseated with my pregnancy, and now doing TONS of schoolwork with my girls...I'm just now getting the recipe to you. Sorry! =)

Cappuccino Shake
This only yields 1 1/2 cups...so I double or triple it for my family. Then before serving it, I test it... adding more choc. syrup, sugar or whatever I think it still needs. =)
Place In blender, and blend well:
1 teaspoon instant coffee crystals
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup milk
2 teaspoons white sugar or I USE MY HOMEMADE CHOC. SYRUP (or if I don't have any on hands, I use instant choc. milk powder)
1 Tablespoon Irish Creme syrup...or I use powdered coffee creamer
1 1/2 cups of ice cubes.

Enjoy! =)

I love this idea. Joshua does wel with memorization, but one of my others is not quite so disciplined. I think she'll love this. Thanks for sharing.

By the way, I do look at your blog all the time, but I often forget to leave comments because I end up emailing you instead. I talk to you so much via email, I forget that I haven't left a comment. Didn't want you to think I was ignoring your blog!

Kelly, Don't think that at all. Actually I would much rather get an email than a short comment on my blog. ;-)
Not that I don't want you to comment either but you know what I mean :-)

Kim,

Thanks for dropping in on my blog! I do vaguely remember your picture in Chris' yearbook! Wow, the world is so small. I'll have to tell him--he's in Colorado now.

This post is dear to my heart--memorizing Scripture is so huge! You may have already seen the CD I recorded, but I did it for this very purpose. I wanted to find a way to help my childen memorize large portions of Scripture...it's hard to find songs with more than on verse.

Anyway, if you haven't already, you can hear clips of the CD on our website. Great to hear from you!
